Anna Maria Island fishing report

Hello from Anna Maria Island, fall is in the air the weather is amazing and so is the fishing.  As I have said so many times before October is one of the very best month of the year for fishing  in Tampa bay, offshore and off surrounding beaches.  Almost every species that swims around here is on the bite.  With water temperatures now dipping into the 70s our peak fall fishing is on.

Inshore the snook fishing is in creditable as good as it gets.  It is no exaggeration to say I have had hours of snook action where literally it is as fast as you can rebait your hook and cast it back out.  It only takes second to get a bite.  Most of the snook are in the 23 to 26 inch class, hard fighters and make for some great catch and release fishing.  We have also been getting a few keepers in the slot size as well as a few large fish up to 35 inches.  I have been seeing a lot more large fish from my tower this week which is nice to see, and hopefully there will be more to come. Fall is always a good time of year to catch a 40 inch trophy as larger fish come in from the gulf.  The trout fishing has also been good I have not spent a lot of time targeting them but when we do we have been catching plenty, but have had to weed through a lot of short to get the keepers.  The red fishing was also good last week a lot of nice oversized 30 inchers along with some keepers mixed in.  This past week I really didn’t spend much time looking for them because I was either offshore or snook fishing.

The offshore fishing is really hot right now.  The action has been incredibly fast.  The kingfish up to 30 pounds have just started really heating up.  The snapper fishing has been as good as it gets a ton in the 16 to 20 inch class.   The Spanish mackerel have been giant and so thick at times you can’t keep them off the hook. There are a ton of catch and release red grouper mixed in with the snapper and a few nice keeper gags around.  There is plenty of hard fighting false albacore mixed in with the kings and mackerel.  There are also a few permit and cobia on some of the artificial reefs.

Overall the fishing is excellent and with the weather so nice it’s probably about as enjoyable as it can be on the water right now.  I hope you enjoyed my report.  Until next time have a great time on the water.
